Indigenous Education
Overview:
Indigenous groups form a significant part of the province’s population with approximately 100,000 individuals self-identifying as being Indigenous. Two focus areas within Indigenous education to enhance educational outcomes are to improve teaching and learning outcomes for Indigenous students and to enhance understanding of Indigenous knowledge, history, experiences, culture, and practices for all teachers and students in the province.
Role:
The Provincial Director of Programs - Indigenous Education is responsible for educational leadership initiatives, structures, and programs focused on improving educational outcomes for Indigenous students within the District. This person will be part of the provincial Programs team accountable for overseeing the effective and efficient provincial implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the full range of student services educational programs, services and practices that enhance the learning for all indigenous students in the District. This person will participate in senior leadership responsibilities to foster enhanced valuing of and actions related to indigenization and decolonizing practices, as well as furthering Truth and Reconciliation and actions in support of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This person will work to develop and maintain strong and positive relationships with the Indigenous people in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, acting as a liaison as required. This person will have extensive understanding of Indigenous Education issues and lead district initiatives to further Indigenous educational programming in partnership with The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and local Indigenous communities. As such, this person will have a thorough understanding of K-12 Educational Programs and Program Delivery. You will also play a significant role in the implementation of relevant programs and policies associated with the Education Action Plan.
